I had a wonderful meeting at the Greater Miami Chamber’s New World Committee this morning. The committee focuses on all-things downtown. We had a very informative presentation from Nicholas Martinez, head of research at the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), who noted, among other things, that population in the downtown corridor is up from less than 18,000 people in the year 2000, to an expected 106,000 by 2021.
The keynote for the morning came from City of Miami District 2 Commissioner Ken Russell, who touched on numerous priorities, as well as answering specific questions from the committee members. He spoke about millennials transforming “how” people live in downtown Miami, as their focus is truly urban…less driving, more mass transit. He mentioned expanding trolley service and his desire to focus on speeding up public access to the waterfront.
I'm pleased to be co-chairing the committee with Jack Lowell. Lots of work to do, but lots of willing hands to make things happen.
